Camping Safety Tips

Before you go

Workout 3 times a week. Focus on core moves. Where can you gain an edge? Only about 1 in 4 guys go to a gym. In total, only about 10% of guys under 30 (the biggest and most common threat, accounting for about 80% of all violent crime) go to a gym. You have an edge if you go. Sure, some work out at home, but who keeps that up?

Be sure to workout a day or two before you leave to get your confidence up.

Do a light workout the day you leave. Just to get you that pumped up feeling but NOT to the point where you're drained!

Even if a trouble maker is tough, if he's not in shape, he'll probably get winded  fast. Use this to your advantage. You don't have to beat him just min the damage, neutralize him or hang on for a minute and then unleash your barrage when he is out of gas.

Grow some facial hair before you leave. A small goatee.

At the camping site

A car tent is much safer than sleeping outside in a sleeping bag or sleeping in a tent.

Car tents allow for significantly faster escape. You could keep it up and drive away, if need be. Granted I'd rather pull it in. Learn how to do so BEFORE you need to.

If you sleep in your car tent, have the doors locked with your key in the ignition or in close proximity. This should be the last step before you go to sleep.

Have as many of your items in one box. That way you just grab it and go. Get into the habit of putting this in that box when done.

Have an escape route. Have 2 paths. Unobstructed paths.

Fire extinguisher can be a good thing to have in case of a car fire (yours or someone elses). And, also as a self-defense weapon that no one would recongize as such (so the intruder would not prepare for it, nor become aggressive on site vs. if you have a bat).

Have a club or bat handy.

Park your vehicle so you don't have to back-up to escape. Have the front of the car pointed in the right direction.

Bring a dog. 2 is better than one!

If there's any males (especially under 30) that look like thugs (sorry but you SHOULD not be pc when your life is at stake - judge a book by its cover if that cover looks like a physical threat) or are drinking, move to another location. The key is prevention (act before you have to). With a car tent it's more feasible.

See, you don't wait till they've downed 8 beers. You don't think they'll stop at one. When they break out the first bottle, you are out of there. If you start to leave then you don't look like you're leaving because of them, so you don't look odd. Many people don't leave a scene for fear of looking scared, etc.

The best defense is an preventative action that takes place before any the provocation even starts. You don't need to wait, anticipate.

Most problems begin with all kinds of signs, hints.

There's never anything wrong with being overcautious. You lose nothing. But, if you feel odd, act beforehand.
