Outdoor Safety Tidbit

Half-Price Camping at 1000+ Campgrounds and RV Parks

A Whistle For Self Defense

Carry a whistle or personal electronic security alarm when you travel. If someone attacks you, blow that whistle with abandon (without worrying about how you look). Let's hope he was not really just in need of a match! If so, apologize and offer to pay for a visit to the ear doctor and then book a fast retreat. God forbid he gets "Tinnitus" as a result! I have that annoying ear ringing problem (for me it's more like a static sound) and it's not pleasant!

You want to have the whistle around your neck so it's easily accessible. When you are stressed, you want to ensure you only have to take simple steps. You don't want to fishing around in your purse or pocket for a weapon! But, make sure the rope or chain is not too long it could be used to strangle you! Any chain or rope should be barely long enough to stretch it to your mouth.

Here Are A Few Things You Can Use To Start A Fire
  • "Canned Heat." Just open the lid, light the substance and a way you go - you've got an instant and LASTING fire. Put a pan on it or use the fire to light something else.

  • Take cotton balls and rub Vaseline into them. Store the balls in a zip lock bag till you need them. When ready to start a fire, take the cotton balls out of the bag and put them in place and light them with a match.

  • Newspaper crumbled into a ball.

  • Lint from your dryer.

P.S. Have a bucket of water, dirt, a shovel and a fire extinguisher nearby and ready in case of trouble.

Winter Camping?

"Winter camping" refers to the experience of camping outside during the
winter - often when there is snow on the ground. Campers and outdoors people have adapted their forms of camping and survival to suit extremely cold nights and limited mobility or evacuation. Methods of survival when winter camping includes: building snow shelters (quinzhees), dressing in "layers," staying dry, using low-temperature sleeping bags, and fueling the body with appropriate food. Camping Joke Of The Day

Two guys were hunting in the forest when they unexpectedly came across a very large brown bear. Immediatey, they both took off running. After a few minutes, one guy abruptly stopped running, took off his backpack, and pulled out a pair of running shoes.

The other guy saw this and was wondering what was going on. So he stopped, ran back to the first guy and asked, "Why are you putting on your running shoes? Do you really think you are going to be able to out run that bear with those?"

The other guy replied, "I don't have to out run the bear, I just have to out run YOU
!"

Which Camper Are You?
Native08 prefers to get away from it all:
"Why bother to go camping, if not for the solitude and oneness with nature? Wilderness camping is where I go to chill."

jkd518 married a social butterfly:
"Camp goes like this, we pull in, unload and set up camp. I get the dinner going while the kids take off and Hubby goes to find a new friend. They wander back in about time dinner is ready, and I get to hear about the discoverys they have made."

Phil likes a little of both:
"I certainly don't mind socializing at the campground, in fact I love meeting new people that way. I do however prefer a campsite itself that offers some amount of privacy."
