History Of Camping

In 1861, the first known organized camp, The Gunnery Camp, was founded in the United States. Frederick W. Gunn and his wife Abigail operated a home school for boys in Washington, Connecticut. In 1861, they took the whole school on a two-week trip. The class hiked to their destination and then set up camp. The students spent their time boating, fishing, and trapping. The trip was so successful, the Gunns continued the tradition for twelve years.

The founder of recreational camping was Thomas Hiram Holding, who wrote the first Campers Handbook in 1908. His knowledge of camping came from childhood experiences when he crossed the American prairies with his parents in 1853.

Mr. Holding wrote a book about the experience, titled Cycle and Camp in Connemara, in which he invited others to contact him if they were interested in cycle camping. This led to the formation of the Association of Cycle Campers in 1901, which was founded with 13 members.

One of the first known British campsites was the Cunningham Camp in Howstrake on the Isle of Man. This opened in 1894 and initially was only for use by male campers. (Source: talkcamping.co.uk)

Camping as a recreational activity became popular in the early 1900s.

Saying Of The Week

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

- Mark Twain

Campground Humor Of The Day

These are actual comments left on U. S. Forest Service registration sheets and comment cards by campers and backpackers:
  • "A small deer came into my camp and stole my bag of pickles. Is there a way I can get reimbursed? Please call."

  • "Escalators would help on steep uphill sections."

  • "Instead of a permit system or regulations, the Forest Service needs to reduce worldwide population growth to limit the number of visitors to the wilderness."

  • "Ban walking sticks in wilderness. Hikers that use walking sticks are more likely to chase animals."

  • "Found a smoldering cigarette left by a horse."

  • "Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill."

  • "Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests."

  • "Please pave the trails so they can be plowed of snow in the winter."

  • "The coyotes made too much noise last night and kept me awake. Please eradicate these annoying animals."

  • "Reflectors need to be placed on trees every 50 feet so people can hike at night with flashlights."

  • "Need more signs to keep area pristine."

  • "A McDonald's would be nice at the trail head."

  • "The places where trails do not exist are not well marked."

  • "Too many rocks in the mountains."

Golden Gate Bridge at night.

Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco, CA, U.S.A.) at night. And, look, NO traffic! If only! I have driven this many a time with traffic galore.

Golden Gate Bridge by day... with traffic! Now, that's more like it! Granted, the traffic was lighter than normal when this picture was taken.

By the way, this bridge makes for a fun walk (bring ear muffs and a wind breaker!). There is a walking path ensuring that you don't have to play "Dodge Car."
